American Society for Church Growth - Book Review
Strength in the Struggle: Leadership Development for Women
This is not only an informative book on establishing basics in leadership; but, because it is written by a woman primarily for women, the author approaches the subject in a helpful manner. She stresses the primacy of the family in instilling values that shape a leader.
Some of the chapter lessons are put forth within the context of sermons (which I assume were given by the author), with such titles as "We're on Our Way Somewhere;" "Kick But" (note the spelling on this one); "Armed and Dangerous;" and "Participate in Your Own Rescue." Each section is based on a Scripture passage and puts forth a very practical message. In fact, the sermons are so good, it would probably be worth the price of the book to have them!
Vashti is an African-American lady, and much of what is in the book pertains to specifics of overcoming bigotry. Although I am not African-American, I found her history particularly interesting and the tools her family used over the generations to overcome stereotypes and roadblocks are in no way specific to one group.
Her book is very readable, well documented, and packed with practical wisdom. It would be well worth your time to read this volume.
